You’re designing a recreation center and the program says “racquetball courts.” The court dimensions and the circulation allowance both affect the building envelope.

Racquetball and handball use the saved 40 × 20 × 20-foot clear box. Squash uses a 32 × 21-foot court and an 18½-foot height. Four courts in a row with a 6-foot perimeter buffer draw a 92 × 52-foot racquetball envelope, or a 96 × 44-foot squash envelope.

Those examples cover 4,784 and 4,224 square feet: an 11.7% difference. The calculation includes clear courts and the selected buffer; walls, services and other rooms are outside this comparison.
