Generation as Compiler
A generative engine acts like a compiler: it takes high-level inputs—program, site constraints, and design rules—and translates them into candidate layouts without asking the user to specify every geometric step.
Compile dimensions into a layout
Deterministic rectangular module packing on three equal floors. The example does not check legal occupancy, exits, financing or structural feasibility. A room is only placed when a complete geometric slot is available.
The analogy clarifies the designer’s role. The brief is the source language; the layout is one compiled output. If an output fails, the useful question is which input or rule produced it, and which constraint is binding. A clear engine should make that path inspectable rather than presenting a candidate as self-explanatory.
Generated layouts may satisfy encoded rules while missing qualities that are hard to formalize. The designer still evaluates and refines the result.
