Bay and Room Rhythm
A useful plan lets the structural grid and room layout share a rhythm. In the drawing, 28-foot bays contain two 14-foot rooms, with the columns meeting their shared walls. Change the room width, bay width, or grid offset and the relationship changes; matching widths alone does not ensure the columns land on room walls.
Make the columns meet the room walls
Fixed 168 × 60 ft plate, two rows of 30 ft deep rooms and column centers at 15 and 45 ft. Columns are points: the model classifies alignment and intrusion, not structural capacity or usable clearance. Grid shift stays within one structural bay; leftover frontage is unassigned.
The example marks column centers that fall inside rooms or meet walls, along with floor area left unassigned. That is the practical test: the bay and room module must align in position as well as dimension.
This drawing tests alignment, not structural capacity or whether a room works. Conversion also depends on member sizes, cores, daylight, services, and code.
