thesis-73-construction-documents-are-build-artifacts

Construction documents are build artifacts: outputs that translate design intent into coordinated instructions. Thinking in terms of a build process raises questions about what version of the model produced a set, which standards it used, and what checks ran before issue.

A model produces coordinated drawings

A stated two-floor rectangular teaching building. Gross area includes the 4 ft central corridor. Exterior wall area is perimeter × 24 ft, excluding roof, floor and internal partitions; opaque wall subtracts all eight 4 ft-high windows. No sheet count, production duration, error-free certification or live BIM export is asserted.

Software pipelines test outputs; construction documents could also be checked against explicit requirements and coordinated across disciplines. Version traceability matters when an issued set changes. Fast-track packages can release foundations or structure earlier, but each package has to coordinate with the interfaces and assumptions of later releases.

Automated checks cover only what is represented in data and rules. Human review and coordination still carry the parts that cannot be tested that way.
