thesis-58-design-tools-should-feel-like-garageband

GarageBand makes creative tools approachable by exposing useful choices without requiring every user to understand the underlying technology. Design tools can follow that principle: handle routine complexity where possible and keep the designer focused on meaningful decisions.

Explore layouts from a useful starting point

Illustrative two-wing layout in a 180 × 120 ft envelope. Each wing has four 30 ft-deep room rows and one access strip. Complete modules determine room count; leftover strips are reported rather than silently filled. No productivity or learning-speed comparison is asserted.

The interface should reveal detail as the task demands. A new user might start with a clear default; an experienced designer should be able to inspect parameters and see what those defaults change. That lets the tool feel simple without hiding assumptions that affect the design.

Building design still calls for professional judgment. The interface should make complexity easier to approach, not conceal constraints or consequences.
