thesis-56-floor-plans-are-apis
A floor plan is an interface between the building and the activity it supports. It organizes rooms and routes, but also has to make room for utilities, access, and the constraints that govern use. A tenant leasing a space is integrating its work with that interface.

A room with enough area may still lack the services or access its program needs. Describing what a space accepts and provides can expose that mismatch before the plan is treated as finished. It also raises the question of how a later change of use would affect structure, systems, and circulation.
The API analogy asks designers to make those conditions legible; it cannot promise that a space will support every future use.
