thesis-30-circulation-is-just-leftover

Circulation is the space that lets people reach and move between rooms. It can be tempting to treat corridors and lobbies as leftover area, especially when a project measures efficiency by rentable space, but they are part of how the building works.

Leftover space is not automatically circulation

A 4 × 3 grid is checked with a flood fill from the upper-left entry cell. Side-touching clear cells form reachable space; disconnected clear cells are pockets. This tests connectivity only, not route width, doors or egress compliance.

The amount and shape of circulation depend on the plan, the number of occupants, access needs and life-safety requirements. A compact layout may use less area yet create confusing or uncomfortable routes. A more generous one may improve movement or orientation while increasing cost.

Net-to-gross area is one way to compare plans, not a complete measure of quality. The goal is not to minimize circulation at any cost; it is to make routes clear and proportionate to the building’s use while meeting applicable requirements. A route is part of the building’s usable area even when it does not appear as a rentable room.
