Plans Need Versions
Building documents change as a project moves from design toward construction and operation. Permit sets, issued-for-construction documents, addenda, and record information are stages in that history. Treating each issue as a version helps people identify what changed and which information to use.
A version change names what must update
Illustrative two-room geometry and explicit seven-artifact dependency map. The baseline gross area is 480 sf: 384 sf rooms + 96 sf access. Changed output counts do not claim that work was completed or that a live file was rebuilt.
Software release practices offer a useful comparison: preserve prior states and make updates traceable. When a drawing or specification changes, the team needs to understand its effect on other documents and work already underway.
Buildings cannot be updated like software without physical work, approvals, and site coordination. Versioning improves the information process but does not remove the cost or risk of changing constructed work.
