thesis-32-schedules-are-just-graphs

A schedule gathers information about building elements in one place. A door schedule, for instance, can list each door alongside its size, type, hardware and the spaces it connects.

Schedules join records from the same graph

Scaled illustrations: 60 × 80 in bed; 6 × 3 ft sofa; 5 × 2.5 ft tub; 6 × 2 ft shelving. Room areas follow their measured envelopes. Door openings and swings are 3 ft.

Four independent rectangular rooms share four possible door connections. Finishes are chosen metadata by room type, not prescribed specifications. A door record references both room IDs; removing that edge removes the record.

That makes a schedule a structured view of the design. When it is coordinated with the drawings or model, a change to a door can be checked against related information. If the schedule and plans drift apart, the contractor may have to resolve missing or conflicting decisions during procurement or construction.

Schedules can improve coordination, but a complete table does not by itself guarantee quality or eliminate field decisions. The team still has to define the information, maintain consistency and review whether the schedule matches the design intent. Clear responsibility for updates matters as much as the schedule format. The schedule is a coordination tool whose usefulness depends on current, consistent source information.
